Terms of Service
Last updated: October 2025
1. What Simple Policy Does (And Why It Exists)
Simple Policy is an educational tool designed to help you understand privacy policies and terms of service. This tool was created because:
- ๐ Knowledge is Power: You deserve to know what you're agreeing to online
- โฐ Time Matters: Reading every legal document would take hours you don't have
- ๐ค Privacy Rights: People deserve to make informed decisions about their data
- ๐ Positive Change: Small steps toward a more transparent digital world
โจ What Makes This Different: This is a passion project built by someone who genuinely cares about digital privacy rights. Simple Policy isn't trying to hide anything from you - in fact, it's designed to help you understand what others might be hiding.
๐ก๏ธ Privacy-First: No Personal Data Required
To use Simple Policy, you don't need to provide traditional personal informationโno email signup, no name, no phone number, no address. You provide a Gumroad license key (a random token) so the service can verify your purchase, plus the document you want summarized. Processing happens on AWS infrastructure, which receives standard request metadata (like IP address and user agent) the same way any hosted app does. You can review how Gumroad handles purchases in their Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
2. How the AI Analysis Works (The Honest Truth)
Simple Policy sends the document text to an Anthropic Claude model (the specific version can change over time as better models become available) to translate dense legal language into plain English. Here's what you should know:
๐ฏ What the Tool Is Great At
- Spotting Key Issues: Finding concerning clauses you might miss
- Plain English Translation: Making legal jargon understandable
- Trust Score Rating: Providing an overall assessment (Good/Standard/Concerning) of privacy practices
- Highlighting Rights: Showing you what controls you have over your data
- Saving Time: Giving you a helpful starting point for understanding
โ ๏ธ What You Should Remember
- AI Model Used: Anthropic's Claude family, configured per deploymentโit's powerful, but like any AI, it can make mistakes
- Known Limitations: May miss subtle legal nuances, context-specific implications, or recent policy updates
- Not Legal Advice: This tool isn't legal counsel, and analysis isn't a replacement for professional advice
- Your Responsibility: For important decisions, read the original document and consult a professional if needed
- Educational Purpose: Think of this as a study guide, not the final exam answer
๐ The Bottom Line: This analysis gives you insights you wouldn't have otherwise. It's way better than clicking "Accept" blindly, but it's not a substitute for careful review when something really matters to you. AI can make mistakes - use this as your starting point, not your ending point.
3. What Happens to Your Submitted Documents
Transparency is important, so here's exactly what happens to the privacy policies and terms you submit for analysis:
- ๐ค Sent to Anthropic: The complete document text is securely sent to Anthropic's Claude API for real-time analysis (Anthropic API Terms)
- ๐พ Analysis Results Cached Indefinitely: The AI analysis results (not the original document) are cached permanently to reduce costs and improve speed. Content is deduplicated by a hash so identical documents share one analysis
- ๐ Monthly Usage Tracking: Your usage is tracked monthly (50 analyses/month limit). The counter resets at the end of each month and old counters auto-delete
- ๐ Deduplication: If you analyze the same URL or document text twice in the same month, it only counts once toward your limit
- ๐ซ Never Used for Training: Your submitted documents are NEVER used to train AI models or improve the system; Anthropic's own usage commitments are described in their API terms
- ๐๏ธ Request Deletion: Cached analyses are stored indefinitely. You can request manual deletion of cached results via Discord
- ๐ Job Queue: Analysis requests create temporary job entries so the worker can finish processing. As soon as your browser receives the finished summary it sends a quick acknowledgement and the job record is deleted. If the client never checks back, DynamoDB cleans it up automatically within ~48 hours.
- ๐ Infrastructure Logs: AWS (API Gateway, Lambda, DynamoDB) automatically records standard access logs that include IP address and request metadata for security and troubleshooting (AWS Data Privacy FAQ)
๐ Privacy Note: The full document content sits in the processing queue just long enough for the worker to finish; once your browser acknowledges the result, the queue item is deleted immediately. If the acknowledgement never arrives, DynamoDB will still expire the job automatically within ~48 hours. The cached summary sticks around indefinitely under a hashed identifier so repeat requests don't burn additional credits. Your license key acts as the usage identifier, and AWS maintains routine access logs for compliance and abuse prevention.

The developer's liability is limited to the amount you've paid for the service.
๐ค Working Together
If you use this analysis to make decisions, you agree to hold the developer harmless for any consequences. This isn't because the developer doesn't care - it's because this tool needs protection from lawsuits over AI interpretation differences to keep operating.
